Wisdom Teeth Drama: 3 Reasons You May Need Them Removed

Your last set of teeth to come in are your third molars. These can start to erupt in your late teens to early twenties, but they often cause problems for a lot of people. A lucky few may have no issues, but you may be wondering why some need to have them removed while others don’t. Here are three reasons why a patient might opt to have their wisdom teeth extracted to protect their oral health.

1.)  Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Impaction is a common reason that calls for removal. In many cases, there isn’t enough room for third molars to fully erupt. Instead, they’ll be trapped in your jawbone, either not fully emerging through your gums or only partially.

If this happens, then there are often several complications that follow. You are likely to experience pain, swelling, and trouble brushing all the way back there in your mouth. This scenario can also lead to issues that affect the rest of your mouth. Having these structures extracted may just help you avoid serious dental problems later on.

2.)  Overcrowding and Bite Problems

Building off the point above, impacted wisdom teeth can push against neighboring structures. Even if they fully emerge, they may cause overcrowding. Over time, this can lead to misalignment, so you’ll need orthodontics to correct any bite issues that were made. Not only that, but you may even have trouble fully cleaning out your smile with new nooks and crannies, leading to a higher risk of gum disease and cavities.

Instead, by removing them before they can cause these types of issues, you keep your alignment in check.

3.)  Increased Risk of Decay or Infection

Since your third molars are located all the way back in your mouth, many people can’t effectively brush them. Pair this with the discomfort they bring, and you might just skip scrubbing them altogether. However, this can put you at a higher risk of decay or infections. Not only that, but if it’s partially erupted, then a pocket might be made that can trap food and bacteria.

By getting your wisdom teeth removed, you can help keep your smile protected from a wide range of issues. While this procedure may not be right for everyone, it can be what you need to preserve your oral health. The best way to know if you need it is by talking with your dentist. They’ll help you learn what risks they bring to your grin; that way, you make a decision you’re confident in.
