SureSmile is a remarkable alternative to traditional metal braces that uses virtually invisible clear aligners to shift the teeth into healthier positions. These devices are designed to be easily removable, and, while this is quite convenient most of the time, it can make it a little too easy for aligners to be lost or damaged when not in the mouth. Here’s a quick overview of what to do if your aligner is lost or destroyed.
How Does SureSmile Work?
The SureSmile process begins with a visit to your dentist so they can make sure you’re a good candidate for the treatment and take detailed measurements of your teeth. This data will be used to craft a sequence of customized clear aligners designed to fit snugly over your smile. Each aligner will exert the consistent pressure necessary to shift the teeth into healthier positions, and you’ll have to switch to the next pair in your sequence every two weeks or so. Most SureSmile treatments can be completed in six to eighteen months.
How Can SureSmile Clear Aligners Be Lost or Broken?
SureSmile clear aligners are not designed to withstand the pressure of chewing and can shelter plaque and food debris from the mouth’s cleaning process, so they must be removed before the patient eats or drinks anything but water and only reinserted after they thoroughly brush and floss. Chewing while wearing your aligners can crack or fracture them, which will ruin their ability to shift your teeth properly. Washing or rinsing your aligners with hot or cold water will cause them to warp, so only clean them with cool or lukewarm water.
However, the most common reason for SureSmile clear aligners to be lost or broken is for them to not be securely stored when the patient is eating or practicing oral hygiene. If an aligner is placed on a napkin next to the patient’s plate, it can easily be swept away and thrown into the trash when the table is cleaned. Always be sure to store your SureSmile clear aligners in a strong, clean container you can keep in your pocket when not wearing them.
How Can My Dentist Help if My Aligner Is Lost or Broken?
Losing an aligner doesn’t mean your treatment has failed, but it can lead to frustrating setbacks if the issue isn’t dealt with promptly. When you lose or damage your appliance, call your dentist for guidance. Depending on how long you have been wearing the aligner, they may recommend simply switching to the next appliance in your sequence or reverting to the previous one while a new device is manufactured. In either case, they will be happy to help you keep your treatment on track.
